Project Overview
Kaipara Moana Remediation is a large-scale, government-supported programme with a long-term goal of halving sediment inputs into the Kaipara Harbour’s waterways.
Scrub works with the KMR team and more than 20 private landowners to deliver native planting and restoration. Our ecologists contribute planning advice, our nursery supplies plants and our field teams carry out the majority of planting.

Restoring steep land at Hellyer Farm
At Wainui, Scrub designed and implemented a Navigator project across more than 10 hectares of steep land retired from grazing. Drone mapping informed the planting plan, with helicopter site preparation and side-by-side vehicles used to manage difficult access. A team of 15 planted 55,000 native plants across ridges and gullies.
Ecosourcing for Manukopua
Work on Manukopua sand island involved close collaboration with Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara. Specialist collection and propagation of local sand kānuka (Kunzea amathicola) ensured the plants came from the appropriate local source. Scrub also supplied and planted native plants and returned for maintenance to supplement local and volunteer efforts.
