Through a mixture of rural subdivision, and commercial manuka plantations, this project aims to transition the land away from high impact land use and improve ecosystem health and biodiversity values across the whole property.
Totara Grove is a large land holding in Kaipara Flats. The land is a mix of farmland and steep post-harvest pine block, with natural wetlands and native forest fragments.
This project has benefitted from the full range of Scrub’s services. From ecological advice throughout all stages of the project, to the propagation and supply of plants from our native plant nursery, and implementing the vision with our operations team, the Scrub team have delivered a seamless service to support transitioning the land.
The restoration is ongoing, and work to date includes: 2ha Wetland restoration as part of the Auckland Council’s healthy streams project (2010), native revegetation planting across 35ha (2012-2019), planting 50ha of UMF manuka (2016), and 8ha manuka oil plantation (2019).
In addition, significant progress has been made on the management of natural regeneration across approximately 10ha of post-harvest forestry areas, via extensive plant and animal pest control.
Our Role
From the onset of this project Scrub partnered closely with the landowner and has been a key part of the project team undertaking feasibility scoping and strategic advice. The project continues to benefit from technical input from our ecologists as our operational teams undertake the physical restoration work.
